Svea
Svea is a tiny little diner and probably the only authentic Swedish restaurant left in Andersonville. We walked in the door, were greeted by the friendly staff and shown to a table by the window. As we reviewed the menu, we also took in the decor. From the blue and yellow covered stools at the counter to the artwork on the walls, it was clear we were in a little slice Sweden.
Svea’s menu is not huge, but it does contain a good variety of Swedish dishes including; meatballs, pancakes, pickled herring and even lutefisk. They also have non-Swedish fare, but after our time in the museum, we both wanted to try something authentic. For Tom, it was a cup of pea soup and the Andersonville Special, an open-faced sandwich on limpa (light rye) bread. The pea soup was fresh and a little salty / peppery but was very good. The sandwich which featured lettuce and sausage was excellent when coupled with the Swedish mustard that was one the table. Theresa, being the braver of us, opted for the Viking Breakfast. As the food arrived, we began to wonder if we were secretly being featured on an episode of Woman Vs. Food. The meal features Swedish pancakes with lingonberry jam, a plate of Swedish potatoes with eggs and sausage and two slices of limpa toast. Theresa dug in with gusto and loved everything, especially the pancakes and jam, but alas it was not her day and she was not able to finish the colossal feast.
